What we know about anxiety is that it causes stress — it is an experience of the mind that makes the person hyper aware of their body and how uncomfortable it feels. The experience is awful. However, the experience is in the mind and it can interpreted in many ways — there are choices for how best to interpret any experience we are having.
To help manage daily stress, gaining control of one’s mind is essential. When you learn the art of healthfully directing your thoughts, you learn that you can actually manage anxiety and improve productivity.
By tuning into your thoughts and actions, paying attention to what you are doing in the moment, distracting thoughts are managed.
This is a skill, a type of behavior, and it is known as mindfulness; it is something that many people struggle with daily. Too often, people struggle with this for their entire life.
Becoming more mindful, a person can overcome unproductive habits, replacing them with constructive ones. Some of our worst habits include:
drifting thoughts;
runaway feelings;
and snap judgments.
Developing mindfulness takes time, patience, and commitment. When you manage to gain control of your mind, you can focus on what you are doing in the moment. Thoughts of the past and the future are set aside and only the present moment is of focus – this is very refreshing. This state of mindfulness extends into every aspect of life.
We need to take steps, one at a time, to learn these new skills. In my work as a doctor of psychology, it is my job to guide people into a more healthful experience of living. I don’t sit and do therapy with people but I serve as a consultant, an educator, a director of operations for life. Each of us is a work in progress forever. I’ve hired some of the most fascinating people on the planet to guide me, I share what I learn.
