Wellness programs encompass, for the most part, diet and exercise routines. Over the past 20 years, there has been a trend to also include stress management, meditation, and yoga. Although there was an initial impression that these programs were frivolous, insurance premiums changed that notion rather swiftly.
Corporations began to get interested in corporate wellness when it became clear that the main topic in the forefront of every CEO’s mind was healthcare costs — the employee benefit of health insurance coverage was making a major impact on the profit margin and something needed to be done to correct that. Organizations began to find ways to work with their insurance carriers and reduce premiums by rewarding employees for weight loss, smoking cessation, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and participating in preventive care health screenings. These initiatives became known as employee wellness programs. These programs took place at the workplace, complete with mobile units from local hospitals coming out with healthcare professionals to draw blood, conduct weigh ins, coordinate mammograms, and perform any other necessary tasks.
Good start but not nearly wholistic.
Before we became Partners In Excellence LLC, Dr Carlin developed The Whole Health Institute, Inc. The Institute began with cardiovascular disease intervention, with the sole purpose of combating hypertension. In order to do this, the person needs to have not only their body in shape but their mind, spirit, and environment. Most importantly, the work included evaluating and instituting changes necessary to enhance the ambiance within an organization. Insurance companies quickly recognized the benefits of the program and began enrolling participants. The program’s components were found to be durable and customizable to accommodate other disease categories and the concept was expanded.
Wellness Consulting for the PIE, LLC evolved from a decade of research and trials. Throughout the program, patients were escorted home and eventually back to their places of work for a thorough review of the environments they spent significant time in. These in-depth evaluations allowed us to uncover stressors in their daily lives. Regardless of the foods you consume and the degree to which you exercise your body, if your workplace or home life is out of balance, causing your blood pressure to rise, creating angst for you, involving pressures that are unreasonable, all indicating that there is trouble.
